CERTs Role in Medical Disasters

posted Mar 23, 2016, 8:51 PM by MPFPD Community Emergency Response Team
Silver Dragon X, the upcoming county-wide exercise, is the tenth annual disaster exercise sponsored by the San Mateo County Health Department. Started in the wake of anthrax attacks, the original scenario was based on how the Bay area would need to respond if there was a regional release of a biological agent. CERTs would have a role in assisting health authors and emergency agencies in such a response. While the Menlo Park CERT exercises have tended to focus on how CERTs could be used to deliver medications to thousands of people in a short period of time, another scenario is to have CERTs help operate a POD (Point of Distribution), a designated area setup by the SMC Health Department Officials and other authorities such as FEMA and the CDC.

To learn how CERTs might function in a POD you can take the free online course from FEMA, IS-26, Guide to Points of Distribution. In addition watching the course online you may download all of the course materials to share this course with others.

Should you enroll for this course be sure to print your certificate of completion after passing the final exam so that MPFPD CERT can credit you with the continuing education hours in the CERVIS database.
