Senate Bill 1211, which took effect on January 1, 2015 paves the way for the state's 911 emergency response system to be upgraded to allow for text messaging. Part of the Next Generation 911 system, the statute directs the Office of Emergency Services to plan for rolling out text to 911 following successful tests in several California jurisdictions. Implementation will require additional equipment in dispatch centers across the state.
