    Wilderness and Remote First Aid

    This 16-hour class (over 2 Saturdays) provides the knowledge and skills needed for a wilderness medical emergency. Learn how to be prepared to survive in situations where no professional first responders are immediately available. Health and Safety Institute (HSI) Certification card provided after successful completion of class.

    Class will be held partially in an outdoor setting (so dress appropriately, and lunch will not be provided so please plan accordingly) All participants must have a current CPR certification, and must be at least 14 years old before the last class on April 27.

    What to Bring: We will be working in close proximity to each other, masks are encouraged but not required.

    Please dress comfortably, but note we will be conducting the training in a converted warehouse that can get cold and we will be practicing skills that will require bending and kneeling so please wear closed toe shoes and long pants.  

    CERT Training Manual:  You will be provided with a printed copy of the CERT Training Manual when you check in.  We have gotten requests for electronic versions, so we are attaching an PDF of the manual to this email.  There is no need to print this out as we will give you a printed copy the first day of class.

    The course will be taught over six weeks.  Thursday sessions will be held from 6:00-9:00 pm and the Saturday session will be held from 9:00 am- 4:30 pm.  You must attend all sessions in order to graduate.

    The Teen Community Emergency Response Team (Teen CERT) Program educates youth ages 15 to 18 about disaster preparedness for hazards that may impact their area and trains them in basic disaster response skills, such as fire safety, light search and rescue, team organization, and disaster medical operations.   Learn how to protect yourself, your loved ones, your school, and your community.  

    Over the course of the Teen CERT program, you will learn the most up-to-date information through hands-on training in basic disaster preparedness, use of a fire extinguisher, disaster medical care, first aid training, search, and rescue techniques, and neighborhood team building. Participants of the program will learn lifesaving skills, rescuer safety, and doing the greatest good for the greatest number.

    The course will be taught 9:00am to 3:30pm Monday through Thursday with a break for lunch (bring your own).  You must attend all sessions and successfully complete the final disaster exercise in order to graduate .

    All sessions will be taught at Menlo Park Fire District's station 1 at 300 Middlefield Road in Menlo Park.  Please drop off/park on Santa Monica, do not pull into the station lot.  The classroom is located in a separate building behind the station.

    ALL students MUST have a parent/guardian-signed permission/waiver signed before the class begins (you may bring this to the first class). Also, please fill out the  "pre-academy" surveys - one from the student and one from the adult/guardian

    Though not required, you may want to download a copy of the CERT manual by clicking this link.

    We will be limiting the class size to no more than 20 students.  Class is free to all participants.

    Location Information:

    We are excited that you will be joining us for the CERT Basic training academy. Thursday evening sessions will be held at our Fire Station 1 classroom, located behind the fire house.  Please park out on Santa Monica Avenue.The final session on the Saturday will be held at our Urban Search and Rescue Task Force 3 Warehouse.

    We will start promptly, so plan to arrive a few minutes early to park, register and get settled in. We will have water and snacks available.  For the Saturday session, we will take a half hour lunch break, and while there are a couple of restaurants located near the training site, you might want to bring your lunch with you.   We have access to a refrigerator if you need to keep your food cold.
